πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ή Austria

Austria uses the euro. There is no national-currency buffer. ECB policy is imported in full. Maastricht debt sits above the 60% reference and is still rising. That ratio is not a shield for the currency.

Purchasing power of €100

Official HICP since 2015 has cut the real value of a euro in Austrian shops. A debt ratio above the 60% Maastricht reference is not a shield for the currency. The euro in Austria is still created at the centre. A rising ratio does not put back purchasing power already lost.

Why this matters in Austria

Euro member, no national-currency buffer

Austria prices wages, rents and deposits in euro. There is no schilling left to float. Households take ECB policy in full β€” expansion and contraction alike. Membership of the euro is not a national-currency buffer.

Above the 60% reference, and still rising

Eurostat recorded Austrian Maastricht debt at 83.3% of GDP in Q1 2026 (€431,411 million). That is +2.0 percentage points versus 2025Q4 and +0.4 percentage points versus 2025Q1. Austria is not the highest-ratio member of the EU. The ratio is still above the 60% Maastricht reference. That is a fiscal fact, not a shield for the currency.

Wage earners pay the same hidden tax

Cash wages in Austria are paid in euro. When the stock of euro grows, those wages buy less in Austrian shops the same way they buy less across the euro area. Savers holding euro cash pay that hidden tax. It does not appear as a line on a tax return.
