🇩🇰 Denmark

The Danish krone is tightly pegged to the euro. That means when the euro loses purchasing power, the krone loses almost exactly the same amount – even though the exchange rate looks “stable”.

Purchasing power of 100 DKK

Even with low official inflation in recent years, the cumulative loss since 2015 is significant. The fixed exchange rate policy means Denmark imports the euro area’s monetary conditions.

Why the peg matters

Stable exchange rate ≠ stable money

The krone’s value against the euro is kept almost constant by Danmarks Nationalbank. But the euro itself is not a stable store of value. When the ECB expands the money supply, both currencies lose purchasing power together.

Low debt is good – but not enough

Denmark has one of the lowest government debt levels in Europe. Maastricht debt was 26.8% of GDP in Q1 2026. That is a strength. It does not, however, protect citizens from the erosion of the currency’s purchasing power caused by euro-area monetary expansion.

What you can do

Understanding the mechanism is the first step. Many Danes now measure part of their savings in assets with harder supply (Bitcoin, real assets, productive equity) precisely because of this dynamic.

Protect yourself. Take self-custody.

Buying Bitcoin is only the first step. If it sits on an exchange, you still rely on someone else. A hardware wallet lets you hold your own keys. Blockstream Jade is currently one of the best options: fully open-source, air-gapped, and built for Bitcoin.
