🇷🇴 Romania
Romania uses the leu. Banca Națională a României sets policy independently of the ECB. That is still fiat: BNR can expand RON whenever it chooses. Own currency is not hard money. Romania is not in the euro.

Purchasing power of 100 RON
Romania never joined the euro. The leu is still a fiat unit BNR can expand. Official HICP since 2015 has cut the real value of 100 lei by more than two-fifths.

Why this matters in Romania
Independent of the ECB — still fiat
The leu is independent of the ECB and still fiat. Banca Națională a României can expand RON whenever it chooses. Independence from Frankfurt is not a gold standard. Romania is not in the euro.
Maastricht 60.1% is not a shield
Eurostat Q1 2026 Maastricht debt was 60.1% of GDP (RON 1,169,870 million). That is +4.3 percentage points versus 2025Q1 and +0.8 percentage points versus 2025Q4. A rising leu ratio does not protect wages or savings.
The same hidden tax on RON wages and savings
Whether new lei fund government borrowing or anything else, existing RON balances buy less. The tax is not imported from the ECB. Romanian savers and wage earners pay it in leu.
