🇫🇮 Finland

Finland uses the euro. There is no national-currency buffer — unlike Sweden, which kept the krona. ECB policy is imported in full. A fast-rising Maastricht ratio is not a shield for the currency.

Purchasing power of €100

Official HICP since 2015 has cut the real value of a euro in Finnish shops. Finland has no markka left to float. The largest debt-ratio increase in the EU versus 2025Q1 is a fiscal fact, not a shield for euros already in Finnish wages and savings.

Why this matters in Finland

Euro member, no national-currency buffer

Finland prices wages, rents and deposits in euro. Sweden kept the krona; Finland did not. There is no markka left to float. Households take ECB policy in full — expansion and contraction alike. Membership of the euro is not a national-currency buffer.

Fastest-rising debt ratio in the EU

Eurostat recorded Finnish Maastricht debt at 89.7% of GDP in Q1 2026 (€255,139 million). That is the largest debt-ratio increase in the EU versus 2025Q1: +5.5 percentage points, and +1.2 percentage points versus 2025Q4. A fast-rising ratio is not a shield for the currency.

Wage earners pay the same hidden tax

New euros are still created at the centre. Finnish wage earners and savers pay the same hidden tax as the rest of the euro area: existing euros buy less over time. A rising national debt ratio does not change who pays it.
