🇮🇪 Ireland

Ireland uses the euro. There is no national-currency buffer. A low debt ratio is not a shield. ECB policy is imported in full.

Purchasing power of €100

Official HICP since 2015 has cut the real value of a euro in Irish shops. A low Maastricht ratio is not a shield for the currency. It is still a euro, still created at the centre. ECB policy lands on Irish wages and savings in full.

Why this matters in Ireland

Euro member, no national-currency buffer

Ireland is inside the euro. Wages, rents, deposits and tax bills are all in euro. There is no Irish pound left to act as a buffer. ECB decisions arrive in Irish shops and pay packets in full.

A low Maastricht ratio is not a shield

Eurostat recorded Irish Maastricht debt at 37.0% of GDP in Q1 2026 (€215,411 million). The ratio is low by EU standards, and it is rising: +2.2 percentage points versus 2025Q4 and +2.0 percentage points versus 2025Q1. That is a fiscal fact. It does not stop euros in Irish shops buying less than in 2015.

The same hidden tax

The euro in an Irish wage packet is the same euro as in Frankfurt. New money still reaches governments, banks and asset owners first. Irish wage earners pay later, as prices rise. A 37.0% debt ratio does not exempt Irish savings from that loss.
